Re: Future of Infectious Disease Specialists -Bleak
That's very interesting. snip “Say that we have an outbreak similar to Ebola, but now occurring in the United States,” Bakken said. “We need to have individuals who are then ready and able to tackle such an outbreak, and we need to have a well-trained public health force. “Whether it’s overseas with...

Re: New: Identification of Additional Anti-Persister Activity from an FDA Drug Library
My family patients have Bb-specific bands on Western blots - just not the exact combination that satisfies the arbitrary (not objective) Dearborn/Steere/CDC surveillance criteria, which inexplicably morphed into a diagnostic requirement. The patients live in the Boston area and their hobbies are ou...

Henry, you seem to have mistaken Dr. Krumholz's observations for my own. I chose to quote him because I thought he had the kind of credentials you and Hv would respect. I will go look for other medical academicians of similar eminence who have made the same points, and post a few more examples, just...

Re: Ms vs Lyme Differential Diagnosis
Thank you for your reply LHCTom, that info was very valuable. I spoke to Stony Brook today and will use them for the CSF/Serum(intrathecal) ELISA with reflex to Western Blot, as well as the C6 peptide test. I would ask for Western blots (IgG and IgM) regardless of what the ELISA result is. Stony Br...

Re: Expanded Study Confirms Lyme May Be Sexually Transmitted
I'll pick up "The Trouble with Physics" at my local library. Thanks for pointing it out. It sounds like what goes on in academic medicine. Medicine has been called "the youngest science" and it is true that before the 20th century medicine was mostly charlatanism. There is a long tradition of preten...

Hv: "...IDSA killing off dissidents" You mean, literally killing? Yikes. You've been reading too many Robin Cook novels, for that idea even to have occurred to you. Durland Fish's email that said, "...we are out numbered and out gunned" must have been really shocking to you. I hope you didn't run ou...

Re: New: Identification of Additional Anti-Persister Activity from an FDA Drug Library
Hv, I can't believe that you have hung out on the fringes of medicine for so long, and not perceived this feature of the culture of medicine. You, yourself, never question the LD status quo, and I have no doubt you are being amply compensated for your loyalty (if only by being tolerated, instead of ...

And now we can argue about who started it.

Re: New: Identification of Additional Anti-Persister Activity from an FDA Drug Library
Will they survive the potential professional suicide of contradicting a heavily defended article of medical dogma, in this case the belief that there are no Bb persisters that a normal immune system can't destroy, after an IDSA-recommended course of antibiotics? It's funny how much rhetorical (and e...
