Question about a poll result (most dubious LD treatments)

Post by rlstanley » Thu 8 May 2008 0:06

In the poll of most dubious Lyme disease treatments http://www.lymeneteurope.org/forum/view ... =14&t=1119 , #15. treatment advice by uncredentialed gurus or self-proclaimed experts is leading at this point in time.

Can you give some examples?

I'll refer readers to this link.

Thanks,

Rita

These self-appointed experts or gurus are so plentiful that I was able to come up with categories that they could be sorted into. Here's just a start off of the top of my head.

The most prolific and aggressive Lyme disease gurus and 'experts' operate through all or several of these category channels:

1) The run-of-the-mill Lyme message board/forum member playing doctor or expert in some area of Lyme disease "treatment" such as detoxing, special diets, 'must take' supplements, "herxing," pushing a specific protocol or treatment, test, testing lab or "LLMD."

Whatever the chosen specialty of this self-proclaimed "expert" or doctor-wannabe, the misinformation abounds. Some of this misinformation is at best a waste of time and money, and at worst medically dangerous.

2) The product marketing web site and/or newsletter salesmen such as the BetterHealthGuy, The Public Health Alert, Lyme Community Forums/Lyme Books/BioMed Publishing Group and the Townsend Letter folks that target the Lyme community.

Beware of the wolf in sheep's clothing salespitch for non-FDA approved and unregulated products, supplements and treatments.

The marketing salespitch is often disguised as a scientific or medical sounding paper, or information gleaned from a legitimate sounding source such as a seemingly well credentialed person, symposium or conference contained within these web sites and newsletters, but is often in reality nothing more than an embellishment and distortion of information, in order to fool, manipulate, impress or gain the confidence of an unwary customer.

3) The non-Medical Doctor Lyme treatment book publishing folks:

4) The Protocol people, credentialed, uncredentialed, questionably 'credentialed,' and lost credentials through medical board disciplinary actions:

Bigelsen: http://www.lymeneteurope.org/forum/view ... &sk=t&sd=a, http://www.lymeneteurope.org/forum/view ... &sk=t&sd=a

Warren Levin: http://www.lymeneteurope.org/forum/view ... a&start=20, http://www.lymeneteurope.org/forum/view ... &sk=t&sd=a

And the assorted cast of nutritionists, homeopaths, naturopaths, chiropractors, nurses etc that target the Lyme community.

These people often are selling their own special proprietary formula tinctures, supplements, tests, and treatments, none of which have gone through meaningful clinical trials, if any, and "educational" books and DVDs of highly questionable value.

5) The uber-fringe treatment "skilled practitioners": assemblage point crystal wacker skilled practitioners (http://www.lymeneteurope.org/forum/view ... &sk=t&sd=a), the Green Laser skilled practitioners (http://www.lymeneteurope.org/forum/view ... f=12&t=966), the Quantum Bio-Feedback machine skilled practitioners (http://www.lymeneteurope.org/forum/view ... &sk=t&sd=a), "Lyme disease coaches" (http://strategic-living.blogs.com/about.html) etc.

Claudia,
A possible addition to your # 2 item---- the PHA (Public Health Alert) newsletter.

This month's issue did have information about Blumenthal's announcement on the front page AND a picture of Dr. Stricker in the Morgellon's article although he was partially hidden. (I don't want to read anything into that statement that isn't there!) :)

But the ads for non-proven remedies are still there in abundance. The paper has a rather schizoid feel about it----- some really good articles amongst many 'unconventional' treatments ('unconventional' being the kindest thing I can say about most of the ads.)

Scott was there, of course, writing with no pay of course, and a picture of Warren Levin MD (!!!!!) in full color. (Is Levin still allowed to use the M.D. behind his name?)

Rita,
This type of info is all over this site.
I would like to consolidate it here so that readers will be able to see a concise summary. I will direct them to this thread.

If there are any URLs that can direct people to anything useful, please post on this thread as well.

The contents of this thread is for those readers new to this forum & interested in this topic and to clarify #15 in the poll. URLs or specifics that can easily be Googled will help the reader find more in depth information as well. Claudia's post provided a nice summary along these lines.

Thank you,

Rita

I've been updating my summary post of 'treatment advice by uncredentialed gurus or self-proclaimed experts here' -- anyone else have anything to add? Fin24?

Claudia---- if you haven't added Connie Killbug or Killbugger to the list, she's EVERYWHERE now. If you can't find her----- let me know, but it would be hard to miss her. :(
