Tick-borne Lyme disease on rise, encephalitis down in Czech Rep

Prague- The number of Czechs who contracted the tick-borne Lyme disease has grown this year, while the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) has decreased, Cestmir Benes from the National Health Institute (SZU) said.

Between January and September 10, doctors registered 2.028 people infected with the tick-borne Lyme diseease, which is 171 more than in the same period last year and 207 more than the average over the past five years.

TBE was contracted by 310 people, which is 135 fewer than last year. The five-year average was 360 cases.

According to Benes, the figures can increase in the autumn when the second wave of tick population is to arrive, the first one being in spring.

The incidence of both tick-borne diseases is permanently growing.

Over the whole of last year a total of 4,370 people contracted tick-borne Lyme disease, the highest figure over the past ten years, and 1,029 people contracted TBE.

Experts believe the increasing rate of tick-borne diseases is connected with global climate warming which leads to the extending of the tick population.
