Bagge,

It's just a hunch, but I'm guessing that your ability to access that "top secret" list was a programming error.

When I just clicked on "DR. REFERRAL" on the LDA site to see if I got the same result as you did, this is what appeared (with a copyright statement near the bottom of the screen):

http://www.lymediseaseassociation.org/i ... &Itemid=74

Just to clarify, there is no copyright statement anywhere on the list you posted. The owners of the website probably didn't expect that the general public would have direct access to it.

The list is readily accessible through a countless variety of Internet searches which do not direct anyone to or through any LDA referral or other web pages or websites. Almost all of the practitioners are indeed licensed medical providers at the address listed. Most, if not all of them clearly appear to intentionally advertise their names with the same addresses and telephone numbers and some do this across multiple websites. Many have their own website where they clearly and specifically advertise that they treat Lyme disease, "chronic Lyme disease", or multiple "chronic infectious diseases". Furthermore, many of them specify on their practice's website or elsewhere that they are a member of ILADS or a member of a local Lyme disease association. Many of them speak publicly about Lyme disease, either at conferences or support group meetings, or elsewhere.

Rather than the possibility of this list being erroneously accessible, given that these practitioners openly advertise such information as mentioned above, perhaps if there was a programming error it was in the login page not being disabled, rather than the list itself remaining blocked. It seems only logical to me, given that all of the same information is readily available and openly advertised elsewhere, and that the list itself is not an income-generating or trademarked product for sale, and that the vast majority of the same information certainly appears to be made available personally by the practitioners and or their advertising agents. They directly promote their businesses using the same information; this is not confidential personal data.

What's the harm?

Bagge,

Thanks very much for addressing this issue.

You're absolutely right, some of these doctors have publicly "come out" regarding their willingness to go outside of IDSA guidelines, and to favor the ILADS view of Lyme disease.

But a lot of them have kept a low profile. I appreciate their reasons for doing so. I'm a private person. Most of the people on this site keep their anonymity, including you and me, even though we aren't MDs and don't risk losing our professional license, by not following the semi-official "standard of care". Why do we choose anonymity? In my case, it is mostly that I don't want the anxiety, that comes from walking around as an open critic of powerful and aggressive people like the Lyme establishment, who have shown their willingness to publicly denounce those who oppose them. It feels dangerous to me, as a scientist, and maybe even as a private citizen. (I'm not saying it is dangerous, just that it feels so; and that matters to me.)

To talk about why I think it would be good to remove this thread, I have to address the differences between your, and my, interpretation of the experts' activity in discrediting those who disagree with them. Please bear with me on this. And excuse my perhaps overly-formal language. It's a touchy subject, worthy of cool, slow, and nuanced thought.

I realize their activity in this regard (the testimony for insurance companies in lawsuits, the complaints to state licensing boards, the editorials in the big journals, the press releases from prestigious universities, picked up by prestigious news media) has a completely different and benign interpretation, if one believes that they are correct in the views they have propagated regarding the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease. I don't blame the doctors and citizens who believe that interpretation; it's a real stretch for most people to believe that the whole thing is a house of cards, that has eluded the famous "self-correction" mechanisms of science.

I don't know if I would have figured out that it's wrong, if I didn't fortuitously have the training to see what's wrong with it, directly, from the medical literature itself. In addition, I had to see not just one, but two, family members go downhill with neurologic LD, to have a direct experience that the disease often looks more like ILADS' model, than like IDSA's. Otherwise, it would all be he-said, she-said. Who's going to doubt the CDC and the Ivy league medical academics, without compelling evidence that they are wrong?

But those of us who do have compelling reason to know they are wrong, need doctors who will help us deal with the reality of this disease. This is the first time I have seen my family's doctor exposed online this way. This fully licensed, etc., doctor doesn't overcharge, or publish; just treats people with complex illnesses, in a little office like old-fashioned doctors used to do. I doubt there is enough wealth there for a prolonged legal defense against harrassment by the state.

What will people like my family do, if more such doctors get pushed out of business?

It seems likely that if you accessed this list (how did you?), the ALDF et cetera already has it in hand. In that case, publishing it here is just one more little mosquito bite inviting them to scratch it, by targeting a few more treating physicians.

It's unfortunate that "my" side of the controversy is so relatively unsophisticated about internet security, public relations, lobbying, and all that sort of thing. I almost think it's not an accident; there are only so many hours in the day, and if you spend it investigating nature by doing laboratory science, treating complex diseases with respect to the individual patient, birdwatching, or serious gardening, you're unlikely (and maybe constitutionally disinclined) to get a thorough education on the dark arts of power and influence, much less to practice them.

Anyway, the problem with spreading the list around is that it's kind of like publishing all the names and addresses of the Underground Railroad.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underground_Railroad
Some of these people were well-known abolitionists, but most were simply private citizens quietly impelled to act, by a peculiarly sensitive kind of conscience. Now we (well, some of us) admire them, but back then they were just seemingly ordinary people with the usual assortment of human flaws, taking private risks, to be of service.

{Analogy offered, in honor of today, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a US national holiday honoring the civil rights leader. He was born January 15, 1929, and was assassinated April 4, 1968.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr. }

I know you mean well, Bagge. You can probably see that I do too, even though you think I'm mistaken. Could you perhaps indulge me and the other posters on the list who feel we need access to non-IDSA-conforming doctors? By taking down the list, and asking Martian to delete the thread, so it doesn't fan the political fire?

Again, thanks very much, for discussing the subject. Best wishes for your health,
Lorima

Basic Internet search engine results include the list.

I shall take the rest of your concerns into consideration. Thank you for taking the time to explain your point of view. I see no wrong-doing in the posting of this information, only a difference of opinion, but if the Admin demands that I delete the thread, I will.

This listing contains factual information, or what is perceived as factual, as not all of the practitioners are indeed licensed to practice medicine in the mentioned states anymore. Alas, their indiscretions aside, how does presenting factually accurate information compare to knowingly presenting false and grossly skewed information? Why is factual information not acceptable or tolerated, while clearly skewed and false information is embraced for 'the cause'?

Bagge,

Without getting too technical, the LDA Doctor Referral "result page" will indeed show up using any search engine (in this case Google) if someone happens to enter the right combination of search words or the link itself:
LDA - Doctor Referral Result Page - Lyme Disease Association
module.lymediseaseassociation.org/referral/ViewName.php
The "result" is the equivalent of an answer to a question. I continue to believe that the result (i.e. answer) was intended to be protected by a level of software security that someone (possibly a volunteer programmer) simply overlooked due to lack of knowledge, inexperience or human error.

The "question" in this case would be something like "What are my options when it comes to Lyme-literate health practitioners in my area?" Clicking on the "DR. REFERRAL" tab on LDA's website was clearly the intended way to ask that very question.

There's a good chance that folks with a keen interest in this information have already seen this list -- possibly for the first time because you posted it here. It's also possible that others have entered the same combination of search words and therefore came up with the same result in the past. At a time when I was actively searching for the equivalent of this list (on behalf of someone in the U.S.), I wasn't lucky or smart enough to come up with the combination of search words that you did. I didn't expect the information would be easy to find, and it wasn't (at least not for me).

I think Lorima has done an excellent job of explaining why posting this list could have detrimental effects for those healthcare providers who have deliberately kept a low profile when it comes to accepting Lyme disease patients. For patients who fear their doctor may withdraw their services (voluntarily or not), this could be very upsetting indeed.

I understand your reasoning, but want to make a suggestion that discussion of anyone's reason for anonymity/low profile in a situation like this is important to have. I'd like to see the thread continue - but perhaps it's prudent to remove the list which has been posted.

Oh for heavens sake, if you just wanted to see if a particular doctor was an ilads member, and you searched that name and "ilads", you come up with the list if their name happens to be on it. In fact, just searching the names of a number of the doctors brings up the list. It comes up even if you aren't looking for it or interested in any lists.

If LDA or anyone on that list wants the list hidden from access, then they better fix it so it doesn't come up on really simple searches. There is no sophistication that one needs at all to find it.

Frankly, if I was on that list & didn't want it freely available to everyone on the Internet, I would let LDA know pretty quickly to fix the software problem ASAP.

That's what I would do too, but I'm not on the list.

I actually tried contacting LDA this afternoon to ask them if they were aware of the possible software problem, but I didn't feel like leaving my name and phone number for Pat Smith to return my call.

That's as far as I'm willing to go in getting the matter resolved. On the other hand, if I were seeing a doctor on that list, I might very well phone their office so they could follow up themselves.

I sent an email to the LDA webmaster yesterday. But if Bagge leaves it up on this site, won't it show up on searches even if LDA gets their version better protected? Anyway, it may be too late (if it wasn't already, before this happened).
