Acrdermatitis Chronica Atrophicans

I was infected with Borrelia Afzelii November 2010
on holiday in Austria. Correct diagnosis took
over two years as this infection is not expected in
Australia. One coarse of Doxycycline followed by
another six months later has helped with symptoms
but still not clear of it fully with some lower level
symptoms still restricting a full recovery.

My main worry is the Acrdermatitis Chronica
Atrophicans mainly on my left foot. The rash has
now been there for around three years.

Other lingering symptoms include joint pain,
itchy skin, sleeping problems, eye soreness
and muscle weakness.

I suspect I am not fully clear of the infection but I am
not sure? After consulting numerous specialists, I
have not found one in Australia with any practical
experience with treating Lyme.

I would like to return to Austria to consult a doctor
with experience successfully treating Borrelia Afzelii
and especially Acrdermatitis Chronica Atrophicans.

Could anyone please suggest any doctors practicing
with this specialty in Austria that I might be able to
contact?

While I'm unable to personally recommend any particular doctor, I did a PubMed search using “Acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans” to get an idea of who (in Austria) has experience in treating people with ACA. Two names that stood out are:

This may not be the answer that you're looking for, but at least it's a start. Medical professionals are sometimes quite generous with their time and knowledge when contacted by patients in another country. This is especially true if you are unable to find a doctor specializing in a particular field within your own country. For example, I live in Canada and have received great advice from doctors in the U.S. regarding two unrelated medical conditions.

It sounds as if you are now in Australia, Frank. The best-known doctor there who understands Lyme disease (LD) is Peter Mayne. He may have retired, but there is an association of LD-aware people:

Contact them: they may know of an Australian doctor who can help.

It's not easy to get thoughtful treatment for late-stage LD anywhere now, through the usual channels. You'll have to navigate it for yourself.

Watch out for expensive magic potions and devices; there are a lot of scams filling the vacuum left by mainstream medicine's wrong turns, in the LD field.
